IT WAS UNANIMOUS!
The vote to offer Rev. John DePalma the position of our new Spiritual Director/Senior Minister was unanimous! Everyone was in favour!
Thanks to everyone who showed up in person and online at last Sunday’s Special General Meeting. The excitement and happiness were palpable! We can all give a collective sign of relief.
The process of calling in our new Spiritual Director began back on August 6th, 2023 as we gathered to participate in the Community Visioning Process, and, in September, Rev. Dr. Kathy Hearn lead us in the creation of our Sacred Covenant.
Our New Minister Selection Committee worked diligently, reviewing applications, and holding interviews with candidates. Spirit responded perfectly to our Community’s heart-felt desires, as Rev. John DePalma answered our call as the perfect reflection of our Sacred Covenant.
We’re thrilled Rev. John said ‘yes’, and our community members voted yes, to extend him a Letter of Call.
There are lots of photos from this special general meeting below.
NEXT STEPS: Everyone is eager to know when Rev. John will start.
The process of contract negotiations now begins. The Board of Trustees has been meeting to refine Rev. John’s Letter of Call/Contract (Offer Letter) and Job Description. Our team is working with an immigration consultant right now to streamline his arrival. We promise to keep you updated on the process.

A Gentle Reminder
with Rev. Melody Bailey
We are reflections of each other. As we cultivate gentleness for ourselves, we begin to recognize Love expressing Itself as the others in our lives.
Last week, Rev. Corinne talked about being Gentle, Patient and Kind with ourselves; and to not listen to the committee of idiots in our heads telling us we are less than (aka the ego).
Today is a Gentle Reminder, a reminder to be gentle not only with yourself but gentle with others. Whether interacting with them or even thinking about them.
MORE ON THIS MONTH’S THEME: GIANT GENTLENESS
"When we let the love that is within us go out to the God who is in all people … then we are loving God with all our heart and with all our soul and mind, because we are recognizing that the Spirit within us is the same Spirit that we meet in others. This is loving our neighbors as ourselves." ~ Ernest Holmes
Last Week's Talk
Gentle, Patient and Kind
With Rev. Corinne Crockett
Last week, Rev. Corinne Crockett talked about being gentle, patient, and kind as the way to personal transformation. If you missed her talk, or want to hear it again, click here:
Member Spotlight: Cathleen Rivard
Sometimes friends give really good advice. When Cathleen Rivard’s friend told her about the Centre for Spiritual Living Kelowna and brought her to a service, Cathleen found something she was looking for, and she’s been coming back ever since, for more than ten years.
Cathleen is a Wiccan, and she felt welcome at our Centre. She became a fan of our philosophy. She loves the idea that we are all one, and nobody is considered “The Other.”
Cathleen grew up in Ottawa and she came to Kelowna 17 years ago to change her life and start anew. So, she got a one-way ticket to Kelowna and never looked back.
Thanks to her friend, Cathleen found CSLK and that helped change her life!
Holmes History: Part 4
The life and times of the founder of Science of Mind
In Part 4 we learned more about Ernest Holmes, the man, and about his marriage to Hazel Foster. This week we read about how Holmes’ teaching influenced luminaries of the day.
Norman Vincent Peale, minister and author of The Power of Positive Thinking, studied Ernest’s teachings from the time he was a young man, and the two men became friends many years later.
“Two things struck me forcibly when I came to know Ernest Holmes – his power as a speaker and as a personality. Ernest Holmes was a true student, a real scholar,” Dr. Peale said “but he was primarily a thinker. You couldn’t be with him long before finding this out because he was full of questions, always wanting to know something, constantly prodding, pumping, seeking for new ideas, new material for thought.”
Ernest Holmes and Albert Einstein had an opportunity to share ideas over dinner, where each spoke on science and abstract laws. Ernest shared with Dr. Einstein his views on world peace, saying that “permanent world peace is not an illusion but a potential possibility and an evolutionary imperative, and science will aid in that evolution.” He heard from Dr. Einstein many illustrations about principles, which affirm that “good” ultimately, must vindicate itself. “Give them time, and physicists and metaphysicists will use the same textbook,” Ernest said.
Actress and singer Peggy Lee discovered the Science of Mind and became a close friend of Ernest Holmes and Hazel. They “adopted me as one of those daughters they ‘didn’t have,’” she said. “Ernest Holmes was the greatest spiritual influence in my experience…. His teaching reached into every corner of my life.”
Ernest’s philosophy was also important to actress Rhonda Fleming. “He took the teachings of Jesus,” she said, “and presented them in an exciting, contemporary way that manifested tremendous feelings of love and joy. He was a lovable, wonderful, warm friend – very sweet and kind, yet also down-to-earth, very real, and most comfortable with life. He was always willing to take the time to have fun and be light about things and not take life so heavily – a secret of youth from which we could all benefit!”
And so, Ernest Holmes and Hazel were deeply involved in many aspects of the culture of Southern California. They entertained and dined out frequently, attended the opera, the Hollywood Bowl, important openings, and motion-picture premiers, and took their place at civic events.
