What Does it Mean: Spiritual Not Religious?

What does it mean to be spiritual, not religious?

For many people, the word religion suggests a particular set of beliefs, doctrines, rituals, or traditions. For others, it represents a meaningful community and a lifelong source of inspiration.

Being spiritual, not religious, does not mean rejecting religion. Rather, it means placing our emphasis on personal spiritual experience, inner growth, and living universal principles that transcend any one tradition.

While we are not secular in the sense of excluding spirituality, neither are we tied to any one religion. We offer a spiritual path that welcomes people of all faiths—and those of no religious affiliation—to explore universal principles, personal growth, and a deeper connection with life.

At our Centre, we believe there is one Universal Presence—called by many names—that expresses through all life. Each of us is invited to discover our own relationship with that Presence in a way that is authentic and meaningful. Instead of asking, "What are you expected to believe?" we ask, "What are you experiencing? How are you growing? How are you expressing love, compassion, kindness, and wisdom in your daily life?"

We draw inspiration from many sources, including the teachings of Buddha, Rumi, modern science, philosophy, and the insights of contemporary spiritual teachers. We believe that Truth is universal and can be found in many traditions and cultures.

Being spiritual also means recognizing that our thoughts, beliefs, choices and actions shape our experience of life. Through meditation, affirmative prayer, contemplation, gratitude, service, and conscious living, we cultivate greater peace, joy, resilience, and purpose.

We believe that spiritual growth is a lifelong journey. It is a journey of discovering who we truly are, deepening our sense of connection to ourselves, to one another, and to something greater than ourselves, and learning to live from our highest values.

In the end, being spiritual, not religious, means this: we are less concerned with what labels we wear and more interested in how we live: how we love, how we serve, how we treat one another, and how we contribute to a more compassionate and awakened world.

Wherever you are on your journey, there is a place for you here.
