The body knows how to dance.

One of the curiosities about being a minister is that it has given me a close-up view on some of the most poignant moments in people’s lives.

We may not be at the birth of a child, but often we walk alongside people as they birth a new idea – about themselves, about their ability to be creative, about their place in the world.

This is the most exciting part of this life. When I see the light of life shine in the eyes of someone, it’s like the best part of Christmas.

It’s also a role that enables me to bear witness to those rare moments when you see that someone is doing exactly the right thing that they were born to do.

This past week, I’ve spent considerable time in hospital alongside my elderly mom. A nurse came, and as nurses do, she needed to do a bit of intricate needle work. I won’t go into all the details, but she was feeling some level of frustration as one vein after another refused to cooperate.

Then she said that in some circles she’s known as “the vein whisperer”. This got us all laughing and she explained a little further.

She said that when she talks to the vein, they seem to respond. And so she began talking to the vein in a sweet little voice, as you would talk to a child, and within moments, the needle slipped in with no trouble at all, and the work was complete.

I couldn’t help but think this woman had a gift. She called it a “nursing superstition” – something nurses figure out and then repeat regularly if it seems to work.

This is a bit like getting a demonstration from prayer. We repeat the things that work for us, and we stop doing those things that no longer serve us.

As I begin the work of preparing for the Louise Hay book study on Heal Your Body, I can’t help but think as well that this is a demonstration too of the body/mind connection. As we laugh, we relax, and everything opens up to the light of Spirit that is alive within us.

We are miracles. We are each perfect in our own way. The body knows how to dance with us, and we can work with it, when we listen to its call.

See what your body tells you this week. Is it aching for exercise? What about water? Maybe it needs some rest. Or maybe it simply needs to dance.

Have a great week!

Peace and blessings,

Rev. Karin
